UFC legend Forrest Griffin conquers rivals, helps raise $20k in ‘Picks for OV’ contest
Presenting sponsor CG Technology hosts event to shine light on venerable Vegas charity
Ultimate Fighting Championship Hall of Famer Forrest Griffin could have a bright future in football handicapping after conquering a field of competitors and helping to raise $20,000 in the inaugural “Picks for OV” contest to benefit Las Vegas’s Opportunity Village.
CG Technology Sportsbooks was the presenting sponsor for the non-profit organization’s season-long philanthropic effort, in which participants chose five teams every week. Former three-term Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, 98.5 KLUC host Chet Buchanan, International Boxing Hall of Fame announcer Al Bernstein, two-time welterweight boxing champion Shawn Porter, FOX Sports Radio host TC Martin, undefeated boxing champ Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s Mayweather Promotions, Opportunity Village’s “Team OV,” veteran Las Vegas sports analyst and handicapper Scott Spreitzer, and Las Vegas Review-Journal columnist John Katsilometes were among those competing head-to-head with Griffin for the winner’s trophy.
As it turned out, the Octagon is not Griffin’s only domain.
As football season (and the contest) drew to a close, the retired UFC light heavyweight champion put his rivals in the sports handicapping equivalent of a choke hold, emerging victorious with a 49-34-2 season. Katsilometes placed second with a 48-36-1 record and Team OV finished third, while Spreitzer, Bernstein and Buchanan placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively. Martin, Mayweather Promotions, Porter and Goodman rounded out the list at seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth place, respectively.

Entrance fees into the handicapping contest went toward the $20,000 total, with CG Technology contributing $10,000 to Opportunity Village.
At a season-ending bash held at the CG Sportsbook at Palms Casino Resort, UFC Senior Manager of Corporate Communications Brian Smith accepted the trophy on Griffin’s behalf, and Opportunity Village’s Vice President of Philanthropy Adam Joseph was presented with a $10,000 check from CG Technology CEO Parikshat Khanna. Participants and supporters later celebrated with a barbecue feast by James Beard Award winner Michael Symon’s Mabel’s BBQ, which debuted at Palms in December 2018.
“Opportunity Village’s mission and track record of uplifting people in the Las Vegas community aligns extremely well with our own company’s values,” said Khanna. “We were proud to sponsor ‘Picks for OV’ to grow awareness of the organization and contribute funds that will directly impact those in the city we all are proud to call home.”
“We had wonderful support and a huge turnout for our inaugural Picks for OV contest and none of it would have been possible without the dedicated members of the Southern Nevada community,” said Adam K. Joseph, Vice President of Philanthropy at Opportunity Village. “It was an absolute blast, and we really have to thank CG Technology Sportsbooks and our 10 entrants that came in and truly supported the mission of Opportunity Village and made it all happen. We appreciate everything you’ve done for adults with disabilities.”
